Abuja, Nigeria – 18 November 2025
In a cordial and highly constructive meeting at the State House, Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, who is visiting Nigeria as part of a week-long tour to engage with youth leaders and promote the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.
The discussions focused primarily on youth development, education, and national empowerment strategies, aligning Nigeria’s domestic reform agenda with global initiatives for skill acquisition and community service.
Youth Empowerment at the Center
President Tinubu emphasized that his administration’s reforms are aimed at creating opportunities for Nigerian youths to thrive, both academically and professionally. He highlighted initiatives such as a special education loan fund, designed to ensure that students who gain admission into universities can afford to complete their education.
“The future of Nigeria lies in the hands of our young people. We are committed to equipping them with the skills, resources, and opportunities to compete on a global scale,” President Tinubu remarked.
The president also underscored ongoing infrastructure projects, particularly the expansion of fiber-optic networks, which are expected to enhance digital inclusion and provide young Nigerians with better access to educational and professional resources.
Security and Governance
President Tinubu briefed the Duke on the government’s efforts to address security challenges, particularly in northern regions affected by insurgency and banditry. He expressed gratitude to humanitarian organizations and reiterated the administration’s commitment to protecting citizens while fostering an environment conducive to growth and development.
Prince Edward’s Visit and Engagement
Prince Edward, in his capacity as Chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, is leading a global youth forum in Lagos, bringing together nearly 200 young leaders from over 50 countries. During his visit, the Duke will also oversee the award ceremony recognizing 320 Nigerian youths for their exceptional achievements in skill development, resilience, and community service.
The Duke lauded Nigeria’s commitment to youth development and expressed optimism about the potential for partnerships that enhance education, skill-building, and leadership opportunities for young Nigerians.
Strategic and Global Implications
The meeting highlights Nigeria’s growing engagement with international youth development programs, reinforcing the country’s efforts to align domestic policies with global best practices. The collaboration also underscores the government’s vision of creating sustainable pathways for youth empowerment, bridging the gap between formal education, practical skills, and community leadership.
President Tinubu’s emphasis on education, infrastructure, and institutional development, coupled with the Duke’s global perspective, signals a shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of Nigerian leaders.
