Senator Okechukwu “Okey” Ezea, who represented the Enugu North Senatorial District, has reportedly died while undergoing medical treatment in the United Kingdom. The news has caused widespread shock and mourning among his constituents and colleagues.

According to reports, Ezea passed away on Tuesday, 18 November 2025, while in the UK for health care. A source close to the family indicated that he had earlier been treated in Germany before his condition worsened. He was a member of the Labour Party, and his death leaves a political gap in his senatorial district.

His passing was first publicly shared by Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, a well-known media personality, via a Facebook post that read: “Sad News. Senator Okey Ezea, representing Enugu North, is dead… Rest in Peace.” The announcement has since sparked condolences from across Nigeria, particularly within the National Assembly.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) confirmed the development, describing Ezea as “wise and gentle” and noting that his prayers had supported her during her toughest times as a senator.

Born on 11 August 1963, Ezea was not only a politician but also a lawyer and businessman. Before joining the Senate, he held several roles, including chairing the governing board of a federal medical centre. He was elected to the Senate on 25 February 2023, under the Labour Party ticket, and had since been an active voice in national debates.

Ezea’s death will necessitate a by-election for his seat, which could have significant implications for political representation in Enugu State, especially given that he was reportedly the only remaining Labour Party senator from the state.
