Taipei, Taiwan — December 19, 2025
A knife-wielding assailant launched a series of coordinated attacks in Taipei on Friday, leaving three people dead and 11 others injured before falling to his death from a department store, authorities confirmed.

Details of the Incident

Police identified the suspect as Chang Wen, 27, who began his assault around 3:40 p.m. local time. According to officials, Chang first set fires on city roads, damaging vehicles and motorbikes, and ignited his own residence before moving into crowded public areas.

Witnesses reported scenes of chaos at Taipei Main Station and Zhongshan Station, where the attacker used knives and smoke grenades against commuters. Emergency services rushed victims to nearby hospitals, treating injuries ranging from stab wounds to smoke inhalation.

Suspect’s Death

Following the assaults, Chang entered a department store and fell from the sixth floor. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Authorities believe he acted alone but had planned the attacks in advance.

Government Response

Taiwanese officials condemned the violence and pledged heightened security measures ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations, which traditionally draw large crowds in Taipei. Police have increased patrols at transport hubs and public venues to reassure citizens.

Public Reaction

The incident has shocked Taiwan, a country where violent crime is relatively rare. Social media platforms were flooded with messages of grief and concern, while officials urged the public to remain vigilant but calm.

Analysis:
This attack underscores the vulnerability of crowded urban spaces to lone-wolf assaults, even in societies with low crime rates. The government’s swift response highlights the importance of visible security measures to restore public confidence.
