US Launches New Strikes on Iran to ‘Swiftly Punish’ Killing of American Troops

Table of Content

The US military launched a fresh wave of airstrikes on Iran, officials said, framing the latest attack as retaliation for the deaths of American troops, as an eighth consecutive day of strikes extends a conflict with no clear end in sight.

The Trump administration has offered little public clarity on how long the campaign will run or its ultimate objective, now that last month’s ceasefire has fully collapsed. Behind the scenes, President Trump has reportedly been presented with options to widen the operation further, as the military looks for ways to break Iran’s grip on the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has so far shown no sign of ceding control of the waterway.

Publicly, Trump has signaled he intends to keep escalating, including threatening Iranian civilian and energy infrastructure, while playing down concerns about how long the fighting might last. He has drawn comparisons to America’s involvement in Vietnam when addressing questions about the campaign’s duration.

Since the renewed bombing and naval blockade began roughly a week ago, US Central Command has said each wave of strikes is intended to keep degrading Iran’s military capabilities. Iran, in turn, has continued targeting US-allied Gulf states hosting American forces, including recent strikes on Kuwaiti and Qatari infrastructure, drawing sharp criticism from Arab governments caught in the crossfire. Israel has not taken part in the latest round of strikes on Iran.
