Israeli army prepares for possible days-long escalation in Lebanon as strikes continue in the south

Israel’s military is bracing for a possible multi-day escalation in Lebanon, according to Israeli media reports, as strikes continued in the country’s south.

Public broadcaster Kan reported that the army is readying contingency plans for an extended period of fighting, though political leaders have not yet signed off on several operations the military has proposed — a hesitation seen as an effort to protect ongoing diplomatic talks from disruption.

Israeli strikes overnight left a number of people wounded in southern Lebanon. Defence Minister Israel Katz restated his position that Israeli troops would stay in occupied areas of Lebanon, Syria and Gaza.

The renewed activity comes despite a ceasefire framework with Beirut that envisions a gradual Israeli pullback. Israeli forces continue to hold positions in parts of southern Lebanon — some dating back decades, others established during the 2023-2024 war — a presence that has drawn ongoing international pressure for withdrawal.

The broader conflict, which Lebanese officials say began in March, has left more than 4,300 dead and over 12,000 wounded, with upwards of 1 million people displaced, per Lebanese government figures.
