Nigeria’s Super Eagles saw their Africa Cup of Nations dream end in heartbreak on Tuesday night after losing 4–2 on penalties to hosts Morocco following a tense goalless draw, crashing out at the semifinal stage of the tournament.

In a match marked by intensity and cautious tactics, neither side was able to find a breakthrough during regulation time or extra time, despite several close chances and long spells of pressure from both teams. Nigeria’s defense held firm against a vociferous Moroccan attack, while the Super Eagles threatened on the counter but failed to convert key opportunities.

With the contest deadlocked after 120 minutes, the semifinal was decided from the penalty spot. Morocco kept their composure, converting four of their spot kicks, while Nigeria missed two crucial attempts, handing the hosts victory amid rapturous home support.

The defeat ends Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the AFCON final and adds another painful chapter to the Super Eagles’ recent tournament history. Players were visibly distraught at the final whistle, having come within touching distance of a title challenge.

Despite the disappointment, Nigeria will still have a chance to finish the tournament on a positive note when they compete in the third-place playoff, where pride and a podium finish remain at stake.

Morocco, buoyed by home advantage, advance to the final as they continue their push for continental glory in front of their supporters.

Nigeria’s head coach praised his players’ effort after the match but admitted the outcome was difficult to accept. “The boys gave everything,” he said. “Penalties are always cruel, but we must recover quickly and finish the tournament strongly.”

The Super Eagles’ focus now turns to the playoff match as they look to regroup after a night of narrow margins and shattered hopes.
