The Government of Botswana has appointed Nigerian energy executive Akinwole II Omoboriowo as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC), signaling a renewed push to reform and modernise the country’s power sector.
The strategic appointment is aimed at strengthening corporate governance and accelerating ongoing transformation efforts within BPC, Botswana’s state-owned electricity utility. The country has faced persistent energy challenges in recent years, including supply constraints, infrastructure limitations, and reliance on electricity imports to meet domestic demand.
Omoboriowo brings over two decades of experience across power generation, infrastructure development, project finance, and energy market reform in Africa. His expertise is expected to support Botswana’s efforts to stabilise power supply, expand generation capacity, and attract greater private-sector participation.
The move aligns with Botswana’s broader ambition to diversify its energy mix, scale up renewable energy projects—particularly solar power—and position itself as a competitive player in regional electricity markets.
With reform momentum building, industry observers say the appointment reflects Botswana’s commitment to building a more resilient, efficient, and investment-friendly power sector capable of supporting long-term economic growth.
