Cuban authorities have confirmed that four people were killed after security forces intercepted a Florida-registered speedboat that allegedly opened fire on soldiers along the island’s northern coastline.

According to official statements from Cuba’s interior ministry, the vessel entered Cuban territorial waters before occupants reportedly fired at military personnel stationed near the shore. Security forces responded to what they described as an armed attack, resulting in the deaths of all four individuals aboard the boat.

Cuban officials said weapons and ammunition were recovered from the vessel following the confrontation. The government characterised the incident as a “hostile act” and warned against attempts to carry out violent actions against the state from abroad.

Authorities in Florida have not immediately issued a detailed public response regarding the registration of the speedboat. It remains unclear whether the individuals on board were Cuban nationals, Cuban-Americans, or from another background. Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the incident and whether the boat departed directly from U.S. territory.

The episode adds fresh tension to already strained relations between Havana and Washington. Cuba has long accused exile-based groups in the United States of supporting destabilising activities, while U.S. officials have repeatedly criticised Havana over governance and human rights concerns.

Security analysts note that maritime incidents between Cuba and vessels linked to Florida have occurred periodically over the decades, often tied to political activism, migration attempts or smuggling operations. However, direct armed exchanges remain rare.

As investigations continue, both governments are expected to monitor the diplomatic implications closely, particularly given the sensitive history between the two countries.
