Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has stated clearly that he is willing to lead the call for Nnamdi Kanu’s release, but only on one condition:
Kanu must show genuine remorse and openly call for peace in the South-East.
Gumi said that if Kanu publicly renounces violence and urges his followers to embrace peace, he will personally advocate for the Federal Government to grant him a pardon and possible amnesty. He compared this approach to past reconciliation efforts in Nigeria, including amnesty for Niger Delta militants and the post–civil war reintegration of Ojukwu.
In essence, Gumi’s message is simple:
“If Kanu shows remorse and chooses peace, I will stand at the forefront for his freedom.”
