Soldiers Announce Military Coup in Benin – What Really Happened

Soldiers in Benin Republic did go on national television and announced a military coup, but the Benin government has since confirmed that the coup attempt was foiled and that the constitutional government remains in control.

What Happened

On 7 December 2025, a group of soldiers appeared on Benin’s national television claiming they had:

  • Overthrown President Patrice Talon
  • Dissolved the government
  • Suspended the constitution
  • Closed the country’s borders

They identified themselves as the “Military Committee for Refoundation” and named Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri as their leader.

Government Response

Benin’s Interior Minister, Alassane Seidou, later confirmed that:

  • The coup attempt was thwarted
  • The loyal armed forces had regained control
  • Only the state TV station was briefly taken over
  • Government institutions were restored

He urged citizens to remain calm and resume normal activities.

Security Situation

Reports confirmed:

  • Gunshots were heard around Cotonou and Porto-Novo
  • Gunfire near the president’s residence at Camp Guezo
  • The French Embassy issued safety alerts to its citizens

However, the presidency insisted that President Talon is safe and that the situation is now under control.

International Reaction

  • ECOWAS condemned the attempted coup and confirmed support for Benin’s democratic government.
  • International media including Reuters, AP, Al Jazeera and Punch Newspapers confirmed the failed nature of the takeover.
