Nigeria’s Super Eagles opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar on Friday, with two debutants scoring the goals that secured the win at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
Madagascar took an early lead in the 16th minute when Ehsan Kari headed the visitors in front, a goal that stood despite appearing to have been scored from an offside position. Nigeria pushed for an equalizer through the remainder of the first half, having a goal by Alex Iwobi ruled out in the 34th minute after Akor Adams was judged to have impeded Madagascar’s goalkeeper. The hosts eventually leveled the score in first-half stoppage time through George Ilenikhena, who marked his senior international debut with the equalizing goal.
Nigeria took control after the break, with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali making a key save in the early stages of the second half to deny a Madagascar chance. Coach Éric Chelle introduced a series of substitutions from the 61st minute, bringing on Moses Usor and Moses Simon. Usor scored shortly after entering the match, converting the goal that proved decisive and completed Nigeria’s comeback. Simon, introduced from the bench, made his 100th appearance for the national team during the match.
Nwabali started in goal after regular first-choice goalkeeper Maduka Okoye arrived late to camp because of club commitments. Nigeria was also without striker Victor Osimhen, who was ruled out of the September fixtures while recovering from a muscle injury.
The result opens Nigeria’s Group L campaign with a full three points. The Super Eagles are next scheduled to travel to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29, while Madagascar will host Tanzania on the same date. The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations finals are scheduled to be held in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
