Nigeria’s football federation puts top-flight referees on notice over officiating errors

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has cautioned referees working in the Nigeria Premier Football League that any official who knowingly flouts match guidelines or harms the league’s image will be sacked and passed to security agencies for prosecution.

The caution came in a memo sent to clubs by the federation’s Refereeing Development Committee and signed by Mohammed Ameenu. It was issued after six rounds of fixtures in the 2026/27 campaign.

The federation said standards of officiating had risen since the season kicked off but that bad calls were still occurring. Some, it said, were honest errors of judgment, while others showed a plain misreading of the 2026 amended Laws of the Game.

The NFF’s acting general secretary has also ordered its Monitoring Committee to send personnel to every match venue and to step up checks aimed at protecting the integrity of league games. Referees were told to apply the laws evenly and fairly in all matches.
