Nigeria’s electoral commission disowns fake online voter registration site

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned the public against a fraudulent website that falsely says a new nationwide online voter registration drive is under way, and reminded Nigerians that registration closed on July 26.

In a notice issued on Saturday, the commission said the site has no connection to it. The site claims registration will run from Sept. 28 to Oct. 27, 2026, and bills itself as the “final phase” of online voter card registration. It also offers to update voter details, move registrants to a different polling unit and replace lost or damaged permanent voter cards, and says both registration and card delivery cost nothing. INEC said all of this is untrue.

The commission urged people not to open the link or enter personal details, cautioning that doing so could expose them to theft or misuse of sensitive data. Nigerian media reports gave different web addresses for the fake site, one hosted on a free blogging platform and another using a shortened link, and INEC’s notice appears to have named more than one. The commission said Nigerians should disregard all such pages.

INEC said the nationwide registration exercise ended on July 26 after an earlier extension. It told the public to confirm election information only through its official website, verified social media accounts and other authorised channels. Its official registration portal currently shows that the exercise is closed.
