Nigerian Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage has accepted a challenge from fellow singer Teni to a boxing match, in an exchange on social media that has drawn wide attention online. No date, venue or financial terms have been agreed.
Teni issued the challenge in a video posted late last week, in which she spoke about how much entertainers earn and how they live. She named Savage as the opponent she wanted to face and said she would take part if the purse reached 1.5 billion naira. She joked about what she would buy with the money, said she would win, and added that she would sing Savage’s song “My Darling” to her afterwards.
Savage answered in the comments beneath the post, telling Teni in a short message to name a date. Neither singer has said whether a real bout is planned, and the tone of the exchange on both sides was light-hearted.
The back-and-forth comes as celebrity boxing gains traction in Nigeria. On Oct. 1, reality television star Phyna beat actress Nkechi Blessing by knockout in the fourth round of an exhibition event called “Chaos in the Ring” at the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos.
