Anthony Joshua Crash in Ogun State: Two Coaches Killed, Boxer Injured

Ogun State, Nigeria — December 29, 2025 — British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious car accident on Monday morning along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Makun, Ogun State, resulting in the deaths of two members of his team and injuries to several others, including the boxer himself.

Crash Details and Immediate Aftermath

The accident occurred at about 11:00 a.m. local time when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and four other men reportedly collided with a stationary truck while overtaking another vehicle. Preliminary investigations by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) suggest the SUV was travelling above the legal speed limit and lost control, though authorities are continuing to probe the precise cause.

Eyewitnesses and circulating videos show the wrecked vehicle and bystanders assisting Joshua, who was seated in the rear of the SUV. In footage shared online, he appears conscious and wincing in pain as he is helped out of the damaged car.

Casualties and Injuries

According to official statements:

  • Two passengers in the Lexus died at the scene. Local reports and subsequent identifications indicate the deceased were close members of Joshua’s team — his strength and conditioning coach and his personal trainer, both of whom had travelled with him for the visit.
  • Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries and was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and observation.
  • At least one other person was injured, while two additional occupants escaped without serious harm, according to the FRSC.

The identities of the two men who died have been widely reported as Kevin “Latz” Ayodele, a personal trainer and close friend, and Sina Ghami, Joshua’s strength coach — both integral parts of his training circle. The boxing community has begun sharing tributes to them as news of their deaths spread.

Response from Authorities and Family

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident and the fatalities, noting that the bodies were taken to the Livewell Hospital morgue in Sagamu. Authorities emphasised that a full investigation is underway to establish the contributing factors to the crash.

Meanwhile, state officials and local leaders expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, especially on high-speed corridors during the busy festive period.

A family source quoted by local media said news of the accident came as a shock, adding that relatives are hopeful for Joshua’s recovery while mourning the loss of the two team members.

Context

Joshua, aged 36, recently returned to Nigeria shortly after his high-profile boxing victory in Miami earlier in December. He has a strong connection to the country through his Nigerian heritage and was travelling within the country at the time of the accident.
