In a major development for Africa’s energy sector, billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Industries Limited, has announced plans to expand the capacity of the Dangote Refinery from its current 650,000 barrels per day to a staggering 1.4 million barrels per day.

The refinery — located in Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos — is already Africa’s largest integrated refining complex and one of the largest in the world. The expansion, according to Dangote, will not only meet Nigeria’s domestic energy needs but also transform the nation into a leading petroleum exporter, reducing dependence on imported refined products.

Industry experts argue that this move could reposition Nigeria as a regional refining hub, with potential ripple effects across employment, infrastructure, and foreign-exchange earnings. It also signals a renewed vote of confidence in Nigeria’s industrial policy and long-term energy vision.
