Nigeria met and exceeded its OPEC production quota for the third straight month in July, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) said Wednesday, though output slipped from June’s multi-year high.
Crude oil production averaged 1.505 million barrels per day (bpd) in July, marginally above the 1.5 million bpd quota set by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, according to NUPRC data. Combined with condensate output of 0.17 million bpd, total daily production stood at 1.67 million bpd.
The commission said daily output ranged from a peak of 1.78 million bpd to a low of 1.57 million bpd during the month. Despite meeting the quota, production fell 4% from June, when Nigeria’s combined crude and condensate output hit 1.74 million bpd, its highest level in more than six years.
NUPRC attributed the month-on-month decline to operational disruptions at the Erha and Akpo offshore fields, which curtailed volumes during the period. Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, has met its OPEC quota in each of the past three months after output in May and June reached 1.53 million and 1.55 million bpd, respectively.
OPEC’s monthly oil market report, released separately this week, confirmed Nigeria’s July output at roughly 5,000 bpd above quota, based on figures obtained through direct communication with Nigerian authorities. The country has struggled in recent years to match its 2025 record of 2.5 million bpd amid underinvestment and widespread oil theft, though officials say improved operational stability has helped narrow the gap.
