Ukraine launched more than 400 drones toward Moscow overnight from Sunday into Monday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said, one of the largest such attacks on the Russian capital region as the two countries continue trading strikes in their more than four-year war.
Sobyanin said most of the drones were shot down well before reaching the capital, with 85 intercepted closer to the city. Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the surrounding Moscow region, said the attack wounded at least 10 people and damaged residential buildings and civilian infrastructure. A fire broke out at the Yuzhnye Vrata industrial park south of Moscow, destroying warehouse space used by numerous small businesses, while unconfirmed reports pointed to an additional fire at an oil depot in Podolsk. Officials also reported damage in Domodedovo, Odintsovo and the village of Maloye Tolbino, including a house fire and a vehicle struck by falling drone debris.
The attack came hours after Russia struck Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities with a barrage of ballistic missiles on Sunday, which Ukrainian officials said killed at least six people and wounded dozens more. The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, said Russia has fired more ballistic missiles at Ukraine so far this month than it is estimated to produce in a typical month, suggesting Moscow is drawing down its stockpiles to sustain the pace of its bombardment.
The exchange comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky manages a domestic political rift following last week’s government reshuffle, which exposed tension between the military’s established leadership and younger reform-minded officials over war strategy. Zelensky was set to hold what his office described as key talks Monday as he works to contain the fallout.
