Zuckerberg Denies Claims That Instagram Targets Children

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has rejected accusations that Instagram is designed to attract children, as he testified in a major youth safety trial currently taking place in Los Angeles.

The case is part of a growing wave of lawsuits in the United States alleging that social media platforms contribute to addiction, anxiety, and other mental health challenges among young users.

During his courtroom appearance, Zuckerberg firmly denied that Meta has ever intentionally targeted children under the age of 13 โ€” a group officially prohibited from using Instagram under the platformโ€™s policies.

โ€œWe do not design Instagram to go after kids,โ€ Zuckerberg told jurors, pushing back against claims that the company deliberately markets to underage users.

Concerns Over Youth Addiction

Lawyers representing the plaintiffs argue that Instagramโ€™s features โ€” including algorithmic recommendations and engagement tools โ€” can encourage compulsive use, especially among teenagers.

The lawsuit also highlights internal company documents that allegedly suggest Meta once explored strategies to appeal to younger audiences.

Zuckerberg acknowledged that enforcing age limits online remains a challenge, noting that some children may lie about their age to gain access. However, he insisted Meta has taken steps to improve safety measures and reduce harmful experiences for younger users.
