The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to build stronger national and international cooperation to address the ongoing challenges of terrorism, kidnapping, and insecurity across Nigeria.
In a statement released on Tuesday, November 11, and signed by the group’s Secretary-General, the OPC reaffirmed its commitment to the peace, unity, and security of the country. The organization emphasized that at a time when violent non-state actors continue to threaten lives and stability, collective action is essential.
Referencing a recent comment by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding possible American involvement in global anti-terror efforts, the OPC urged President Tinubu to explore international partnerships that could help Nigeria combat terrorism more effectively. The group also encouraged the Federal Government to work with the United States and other developed countries to freeze the assets of terrorism financiers both within and outside Nigeria.
According to the OPC, “Security is a shared responsibility.” The organization expressed readiness to support Nigeria’s security agencies through intelligence sharing and community-based vigilance. It noted that OPC members, who are deeply rooted in local communities across the South-West, Kogi, Kwara, Edo, and Delta States, are well positioned to provide timely information about suspicious activities and movements of criminal groups.
The group outlined its plan to assist law enforcement agencies by relaying verified information, creating communication channels to prevent delays, and helping to educate community members on the importance of reporting suspicious behavior. It stressed that its role is to complement—not replace—the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Armed Forces.
Reaffirming its commitment to lawful conduct, the OPC stated that it will not engage in any form of unauthorized enforcement or “jungle justice.” It called on the government to take decisive action against individuals and networks that enable or profit from insecurity, saying that the safety of citizens must remain the top priority.
“The OPC stands for a safe and secure Yoruba homeland within a stable Nigeria,” the statement concluded. The group reiterated its willingness to maintain open communication with security agencies and policymakers to ensure peace, safety, and development across the South-West and other Yoruba-speaking areas.
