Today, Barr.Nyesom Wike, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), had a tense encounter with military officers in Abuja’s Gaduwa District over a disputed piece of land.
Reports from Premium Times and The Guardian say that when Wike’s team arrived at the site, uniformed officers blocked access, claiming they were following orders. Wike asked to see proper documentation and emphasized that lawful government work should not be obstructed.
He also made it clear that the FCTA has no record of valid title documents or building permits for the land and immediately ordered construction to stop until the matter is resolved. Wike stressed that everyone must follow the law, no matter their rank or background.
The land is reportedly linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (retired), which adds another layer of complexity to the situation. Wike has reportedly reached out to the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff to clarify the military’s involvement and resolve the issue peacefully.
This incident shines a light on land management challenges in Abuja and the importance of transparency, proper documentation, and cooperation between government and security agencies
