Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday joined the country in marking National Teachers’ Day, praising educators for the sacrifices they make and for their role in shaping the nation’s future.
The observance falls on Oct. 5 each year and closes National Teachers’ Month, a monthlong celebration that begins on Sept. 5 and coincides with World Teachers’ Day.
Marcos’s message on previous occasions has described teachers as second parents who help raise students into future leaders, and has pointed to measures meant to ease the burdens of the profession. These include a law that raised the annual teaching allowance to 10,000 pesos, personal accident insurance and special hardship allowances for teachers posted in difficult areas. The Education Department, headed by Secretary Sonny Angara, has typically led the national celebrations.
