🇳🇬 “No Genocide in Nigeria,” Says AU Chief After U.S. Military Threats

African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has dismissed claims by former U.S. President Donald Trump that genocide is taking place in Nigeria.

Speaking from Addis Ababa, Youssouf stated that while Nigeria faces severe security challenges — including terrorism and communal violence — there is no evidence of organized genocide against any group.

His remarks came after Trump warned of possible U.S. sanctions and military intervention over alleged religious persecution. The AU chief described such comments as “misleading and inflammatory,” urging global leaders to support peace initiatives rather than spread divisive narratives.

“There’s a dangerous habit of framing local conflicts in global religious terms,” Youssouf said. “That narrative helps no one — it fuels more division.”

Nigeria’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the AU’s clarification, emphasizing that the government remains committed to fighting terrorism and upholding religious tolerance.

Observers believe the AU’s response underscores Africa’s growing confidence in managing its own affairs and countering international misrepresentation.
