Nigeria’s electoral commission declared Ademola Adeleke winner of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election, securing him a second term in office after he polled 511,067 votes against 444,815 for his nearest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the ruling All Progressives Congress. Adeleke carried 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas.
Reaction from national opposition figures followed swiftly. Peter Obi, who is positioning himself as a presidential contender for 2027, framed the outcome as a broader win for the democratic process, praising the conduct of Osun voters and pointing in particular to young people in the state, whom he credited with helping safeguard the integrity of the vote.
He tied the result to lessons for the country ahead of next year’s general election, arguing that a functioning democracy depends on an engaged and vigilant electorate willing to insist that every vote is properly counted, and calling on politicians to compete on the basis of policy and character rather than intimidation or violence.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar likewise offered his congratulations, characterizing the result as a clear expression of the electorate’s preference and commending the largely peaceful atmosphere in which the vote took place.
Adeleke’s victory extends a political career that has seen sharp swings in fortune in the southwestern state, including a narrow loss in 2018 and a protracted legal fight to hold on to his first term after winning office in 2022.
