🇳🇬South-East Reps Call on Tinubu to Pardon Mazi Nnamdi Kanu: A Reasoned Appeal for Healing

Table of Content

In a sharply worded and deeply considered communiqué, 42 members of the South-East Caucus in Nigeria’s House of Representatives have formally urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant a presidential pardon to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Their appeal, they argue, is not just political—it is rooted in the urgent need for peace, stability, and reconciliation in the South-East.

The lawmakers emphasize that while they respect the judiciary and acknowledge the gravity of Kanu’s conviction, the matter has grown beyond legal boundaries, taking on profound humanitarian, economic, and security dimensions. Under these circumstances, they call on the president to use his constitutional power under Section 175 of the 1999 Constitution to intervene with clemency.

Their reasoning is compelling: Kanu’s continued imprisonment, they warn, has aggravated tension across the region. According to the caucus, this state of unrest is not abstract but “deeply felt” — markets remain shuttered, schooling has been interrupted, commerce is disrupted, and communities live in an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.

By granting clemency, the lawmakers believe the president can send a powerful message. Such an act, they argue, would stand as a symbol of inclusiveness and leadership, one that prioritizes healing over division. More than that, it would open space for constructive engagement — between the federal government, regional leaders, and community stakeholders — laying the foundation for a more sustainable and peaceful future for the South-East.

Indeed, the caucus explicitly frames the request as an “investment in Nigeria’s long-term peace and cohesion.” The appeal is not about dismissing justice — but about recognizing when justice alone may not be enough, and when political statesmanship is required.

Finally, the lawmakers urge their constituents to remain calm and law-abiding, even as they press for this call for mercy. They are clear: they are not calling for impunity, but for a pathway to de-escalation and renewed dialogue.

Why Their Appeal Matters

  1. A Real Risk of Escalation
The representatives warn that without a political resolution, the cycle of agitation and security operations may intensify, undermining both regional stability and national unity.
  2. Symbolic Power of Mercy
A pardon, in their view, would go beyond legal relief—it would communicate a willingness by the center to reconcile and heal long-standing grievances.
  3. Strategic Use of Section 175
By invoking the president’s constitutional discretion, the Reps are asking for a mature, statesmanlike solution, not a cheap political fix.
  4. Community and Economic Relief
The call underscores the deep social toll of Kanu’s detention. Families, businesses, schools — all have borne collateral damage. A release could help restore a sense of normalcy.

A Modest Demand, But a Powerful One

What the South-East caucus is asking for is not radical: they are not demanding that Kanu be exonerated, or that the court’s decision be overturned. Rather, they are calling for executive compassion, a gesture that respects the rule of law while recognizing that some situations require more than just legal remedy.

If President Tinubu were to grant their request, it would not only address immediate tensions, but also reaffirm that dialogue still matters in Nigeria. It could become a turning point — a sign that the government is ready to heal, not just punish.
