Trump raises doubts over US support for UK in Falklands dispute

President Donald Trump raised doubts on Thursday about whether the United States would back Britain in any future conflict over the Falkland Islands, injecting fresh tension into the decades-old sovereignty dispute with Argentina.

In an interview with British broadcaster GB News, Trump criticized the UK over what he described as insufficient support during the U.S. war with Iran, saying Britain had “not been there to help me,” though he later acknowledged American forces had not required British assistance. His comments echoed remarks made earlier in the week, when he was asked whether his administration was reviewing its position on the islands and replied only that he “always reviews every position” and that the Falklands were “just one of many.”

The remarks came as Argentine President Javier Milei prepared to deliver a televised address billed by his government as detailing diplomatic progress on what he calls the “sacred” Malvinas cause — Argentina’s term for the islands, which lie roughly 300 miles off its coast. Milei welcomed Trump’s comments, calling them a major development on the issue.

For decades, successive U.S. administrations have maintained formal neutrality on the competing sovereignty claims, recognizing Britain’s de facto administration of the islands while taking no position on the underlying dispute. Any shift from that stance would mark a significant break with longstanding policy and risk straining relations with London.

Argentina has long argued it inherited a claim to the islands from Spain and that Britain’s presence there since 1833 is illegal occupation. The issue carries outsized political weight domestically and resurfaced this year when Argentine players displayed a banner reading “The Malvinas are Argentine” after defeating England in the World Cup semifinal, prompting a fine from FIFA. Britain fought a war with Argentina over the islands in 1982 after Argentine forces invaded the territory.
